Gani Enahoro
A Nigerian veterinary practitioner, Dr Gani Enahoro, has been elected as the World Veterinary Association (WVA) Councillor for Africa in the 2017-2020 executive council.
It is the first time in the history of the 154-year-old organisation that a Nigerian will be representing Africa as a councilor.
The outgoing councilor, Professor Maria Antonieta Baptista, is from Angola.
The official letter of notification from WVA Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium, stated: “Following the outcome of the 2017 WVA elections, I’m delighted to inform you that you were elected for the position of WVA Councillor for Africa for the 2017-2020 term. Your term in office will start on August 30.”
Enahoro contested along with two other candidates, Dr Clive Peter Marwick from South Africa and Dr Berhanu Admassu Abegaz, an Associate professor from Ethiopia.
He was a past national president of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), 2011-2013 and currently Vice President, African Veterinary Association (AVA) since 2014.
In her congratulatory message, Professor Baptista stated: “I am sure that you will very well represent our Africa as you are one of the best bricks of AVA.”
Immediate past president of WVA, Dr Kechrid Faouzi, in his mail, stated: “Congratulations on your brilliant election. I am proud of you to represent the African continent and AVA. Good luck and congratulations to the NVMA.”
Enahoro, who was honoured as the “Role Model of the Veterinary Profession in Nigeria” by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2011, also bagged the distinguished alumnus award from his alma mater, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, in March 2017.
He was the recipient of Award of Excellence from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in February 2016 for “Excellent contributions to veterinary enterprises in Nigeria.”
