Nigerian student’s death: NANS demands justice from Philippines Govt

The National Association of Nigerian Students( NANS) has urged the government of the Philippines to immediately fish out the killers of a Nigerian medical student, simply identified as Ikem, who was reportedly murdered in the Philippines last Saturday.

Ikem was said to have been beaten to death by a group of Chinese restaurant workers in the Philippines over a matter that is still unclear.

Condemning the alleged killing, NANS, in a statement made available on Monday by its Vice President on External Affairs, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the entire Nigerian student body, both at home and abroad, is still in shock over the circumstances under which one of them was sent to an early grave in the faraway Philippines.

He said they are deeply grieving and considered the killing barbaric, which calls for international condemnation.

According to him, we, the entire Nigerian student body, want the Philippine government to take immediate action by fishing out Ikem’s killers and allowing them to face the full wrath of the law.

He said the Philippine government must not in any way allow its age-long relationship with China to overshadow the pursuit of justice for Ikem as an international student in the country.

He said the failure of the Philippine government to hold Ikem’s killers accountable for their actions and ensure justice is fully served may result in NANS escalating the matter to an international level, including mobilising a global protest at the Philippines Embassy in and outside Nigeria.

He said it’s required that the Philippines be able to protect the lives and property of not only its citizens but also other nationals living in the country, just as it is applicable to other countries globally.

“So, Ikem’s killing must not be swept under the carpet,” he emphasised.

Akinteye, while also calling on the Nigerian Diaspora Commission and the National Assembly to intervene in the matter, said the international community must equally stand united and demand justice for Ikem.

He said that is the only way to prevent the repeat of such a barbaric incident in the Philippines and globally, by extension
