The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, Professor Babatola Ayodele has called on scientists in the institution to focus their research and discoveries in a bid to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The VC spoke while declaring open the 2025 International Conference of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the university with theme, ‘ Optimizing Basic Medical Sciences Research within the Context of Achieving Sustainable Development Goals’
Babalola, who acknowledged the crucial role of the faculty to the institution, appealed to the scholars to come up with discoveries that would provide solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting humanity.
He reiterated the readiness of the university under his leadership to support research works, saying that quality research with the use of technology would help in attaining the socio-economic development of the society.
According to him, ” the theme of this conference is apt and timely and I want to urge us that our research should focus on how to attain the SDGs for us to move forward.
“So, we will continue to support quality and cutting edge research that will solve national and global contemporaries challenges by leverage on technology.”
The Dean of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Olatunde Oseni emphasized that the faculty, which is the foundation of all medical progress is crucial in achieving the SDGs by 2030, hence the need for the conference.
He argued that medical science through its different fields is key to generating knowledge and innovation that would drive a healthier and more sustainable society for all.
Oseni said, ” this conference offers a unique opportunity to examine how we can refine our research approaches, foster interdisciplinary collaborations and translate our findings into impactful policies and practices.
“As we discuss new data, methodologies and frameworks, I encourage you to think beyond the laboratory bench to consider the communities, systems and futures that your work can transform.”
The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and acting head of the Anatomy department in EKSU, Dr Adebanji Akingbade said that all the world, researchers have begun to align their work in the direction aimed at achieving the SDGs.
Akingbade, who emphasised the place of funding through grants and bursary awards for quality research, said scientists must position themselves in getting the right strategies for them to attract the required funding for their work.
On her part, the acting head of the Medical Laboratory Science department and coordinator sponsorship and registration for the conference, Dr Funmilayo Adewumi, said basic medical science are working on research towards ameliorating critical health challenges in the society including diabetes, cancer and antimicrobial resistance.
