A special Juma’h service, dua Qunoot and solidarity rally dedicated to the people of Palestine amid the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza will be held today at the Dawah Centre, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Ijeshatedo, Lagos.
The Juma’h service is part of this year’s Aqsa Day, Nigeria’s biggest annual solidarity gathering of intellectuals for Palestine. The event is usually attended by thousands of Nigerians from all walks of life.
Today coincides with the 12th of Rabiul Awwal 1447AH, a national holiday set aside by the Federal Government for Nigerian Muslim Ummah to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
Unlike previous years, when pro-Palestine advocates gathered in open spaces, including the National Stadium in Surulere for awareness lectures, the organisers, the Muslim Awareness International (MAI), announced a change in focus for the 2025 edition.
“This year is going to be unique, considering the current situation in Gaza,” MAI Director, Alhaji Abdul Waheed Atoyebi, told Muslim News, saying that arrangements have been concluded to organise special prayers “for our brothers and sisters in Palestine” and other crisis-ridden regions across the world.
According to him, the programme tagged; ‘Special Juma’h Prayers for Gaza’, will commence at 10am with a pre-Khutbah lecture focusing on the manifestation of the Israeli agenda in Nigeria and Africa.
“It will be followed by the Juma’h prayer with Qunoot, and a solidarity rally,” he added.
Atoyebi stressed that the 23 months of “genocide” in Gaza which has led to the death of 60,839 Palestinians, especially children and women, with nearly 149,600 injured, requires divine intervention after several attempts to end the “genocide” proved abortive.
He accused Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, of obstructing global peace efforts.
“That is why we felt it important to dedicate this year’s Aqsa Day to pray for our brothers and sisters in Gaza and across other crisis-ridden regions of the world,” he said, while also urging world leaders, especially Muslim leaders, to take a stand against “the unjust killing of innocent children, women and journalists.”
He further called on Muslims across Nigeria, regardless of ideological leanings, to attend the programme and “be part of history.”
