The Minister of Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, has said the federal government of Nigeria, would seek out opportunities to mobilise funds to mitigate the challenge of climate change in the country at the Glasgow meeting of the Conference of Parties COP26.

Ikeazor said Nigeria would do this after it has showcased her achievements on climate change to the conference of parties at Glasgow later this month.

Ikeazor said this in Abuja at the 15 National Council on Environment (NCE) which focused on the appraisal of emerging challenges and the opportunities in the environment sector.

Already the nation has established an action plan on gender mainstreaming and youth initiatives to drive adaptation to climate change.

She said “The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP 26 meeting scheduled to hold in Glasgow later this month, would be an opportunity showcase our achievements and address the Agenda items for discussion that are of immediate importance to Nigeria these include:

“Mobilising finance to address climate change, scaling up adaptation by strengthening our ability to adapt to climate change impacts and Finalising the Paris Rulebook – focusing on Article 6, the minister told the participant to the 15tg Council on the environment.”

According to her part of the obligation of Nigeria and by extending the ministry, to the Paris Agreement was to improve on the nation’s adaptation strategy to climate change for that the ministry has been able to “revise the National Policy on Climate Change (NPCC) which was approved in June 2021 by the Federal Executive Council.

“It went further to develop an adaptation communication document, which will highlight Nigeria adaptation efforts to the impacts of climate change, the Minister stated.

According to Ikeazor, the country has been able to “Develop a National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change (NAPGCC) in line with the Gender Action Plan adopted in COP23 Bonn 2017.

The minister was also able to establish a National Youth Climate Innovation Hub and developed a Youth Manual to harness climate innovation ideas from young Nigerians as well as include youths in the decision-making process.

She pointed out that the commitment to improve the nation’s carbon credit has led to the remediation of (HYPREP). 15.3 Hectares of polluted land into arable land suitable for agricultural activities in Ogoniland

Ikeazor said “currently ongoing is the construction of six water supply schemes with a capacity of supplying 2400 cubic meters (m3) of portable water per day to communities across the four LGAs of Ogoniland.

“Furthermore, the Ministry is also accelerating the implementation of the Great Green Wall Programme, through its Agency, the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), which was established principally to reverse land degradation and desertification by supporting local communities in the sustainable management and use of natural resources to reduce poverty, enhance food security and promote sustainable livelihood.

“The Agency has cumulatively increased the total average of arable land recovered from a baseline of 90 Hectares in 2019 to 4,792 Hectares by the second quarter of 2021.

“It has also increased the number of trees (Orchards and Woodlots) Planted from one million and eighty thousand (1,080,000) to five million, six hundred and twelve thousand four hundred (5,612,400).

“In the same vein, Federal Department of Forestry and Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has also increased the vegetation cover from the baseline of one hundred and fifty-five thousand two hundred (155,200) trees in 2019 to six hundred and thirty-five thousand, eight hundred and forty (635,840) by the second quarter of 2021.

“In addressing the adverse effects of pollution in our environment, the Ministry is ensuring compliance with global environmental agreements through transformative strategies such as: The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Framework being implemented in three sub-sectors.”

She listed the sectors to include: “electrical electronics equipment, food and beverages, and battery waste streams. The goal is to formalize the activities of producers in these sectors to ensure sustainable production and consumption processes.

“Furthermore, a total of five hundred and four thousand, two hundred and eighty (504,280) Kg of PET and e-waste plastics have been recovered for treatment in an Environmentally Sound manner.

“Implementation of a comprehensive programme on the domestic use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas: The Ministry has taken positive steps towards the actualization of the Gas Utilization Initiative (GUI): Development of Environmentally Friendly & Sustainable Gas to Energy Master Plan (Mapping of Gas Flare Points Project in Nigeria).

She noted that the ministry also ensured the issuance of twenty-nine (29) permits for the export of hazardous wastes and import of green wastes in line with the Basel Convention on Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste and other Wastes and their Disposal.

According to her, all these efforts aimed at the safety of the environment for Nigerians habitation would be raised at the Conference of Parties 26bin glass chow with a view to access funding for Nigeria to further empower Nigerians and fight climate change.
