In a significant move to deepen bilateral relations, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs from Nigeria and Spain met in Madrid on Tuesday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations.
This agreement establishes a regular dialogue mechanism to advance mutual interests and consolidate cooperation between the two nations.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in various fields, including economic development, security, education, energy, and the fight against climate change.
The meeting highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance as a partner for Spain in West Africa, a region prioritized in the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028. Similarly, Spain is a key ally for Nigeria within the European Union, promoting stronger relations between the EU and Africa.
Both ministers discussed regional situations, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa, emphasizing the importance of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in regional stability and development.
They also exchanged views on other challenges facing the continent and shared concerns regarding international situations in Gaza and Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and respect for international law.
The visit marks a significant step in deepening Nigeria-Spain relations, with both ministers committing to continued close cooperation for the benefit of their peoples and the strengthening of Africa-Europe relations.
