Nigeria needs visionary policies, not new states — ‘Tokunbo Pearse

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Adetkunbo Pearse, has flayed the National Assembly over move to create an additional 31 states in the country, saying that what Nigeria needed is not more states but a visionary policy to enable the exiting 36 states and Abuja FCT become more independent and be able to develop with the mineral resources available to them as obtained in a true Federation such as the United State of America.

Pearse, a Public Affairs Analyst, and also the Convener, Reset Lagos PDP, while noting that the move showed another example of a National Assembly without imagination or creativity, quickly recalled that among the existing 36 states and Abuja FCT, only Lagos, Kano and Rivers states were self sustaining.

The party chieftain, who is also former Member, PDP National Presidential Campaign Council (2023), in his reaction, warned that these additional states if eventually created would simply become 31 new areas of poverty.

“On creating an additional 31 states! Here is another example of a National Assembly without imagination or creativity.

“The existing 36 states and Abuja FCT can hardly survive. Only Lagos State, Kano State and Rivers State are self sustaining. These additional 31 states will simply become 31 new areas of poverty.

“What Nigeria needs is not more states but a visionary policy which will enable the exiting 36 states and Abuja abuja FCT to become more independent so that they can use there mineral resources to develop their states as is the practice in a true Federation such as the USA!” Pearse said.
