The Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, Lagos library, recently began to put on a new look and loaded with new books, this is courtesy of Nigeria Connects, a non-for-profit organisation based in the United States of America.
The move, according to Director of Operations and International Ambassador for Nigeria Connect, Dr Abiola Fashina, was part of the organisation’s commitment and concerted efforts to provide access to quality educational resources, fostering a more informed and capable society.
She noted that the vision is to empower Nigerians, making available the information they need through books.
Speaking with journalists during the handing over of the renovated library, which has also been loaded with books and some computers, Fashina, said the newly transformed library will serve as a beacon of learning, innovation and progress.
Fashina stated further: “Nigeria Connect is into library makeover for different institutions in Nigeria, namely primary schools, secondary schools, tertiary institutions, health science schools, and prisons.
“We have put libraries in 22 prisons so far, we have done about 18 universities, we have done about 16 nursing schools and our vision is to empower Nigerians by giving them access to information via books, e-library and computers so they can be educated just like every other person from any country of the world.
“We believe if we have the education, we will be able to change our mindset and change our world. For the Ikeja Police College, we are putting security books that will help them in policing as it is being done in the developed world.
“It will also open them up to other libraries worldwide, so they can carry out research about arrest, about care, about protecting the citizens. Our vision is by educating the police, we will be able to increase the level of security in Nigeria.”
Speaking on how the organisation gets funds to carry out its numerous projects, Fashina, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of MyFaithNetwork International, Atlanta, USA, said:”Nigeria Connect gets donations through different organisations which donate books to us.
“We donate the books too, all we do is ask for sponsorship to get the books and computers from the United States of America to Nigeria. Any institution can apply and we take it up from there.”
The Commandant of the Nigeria Police College, Olabode Fasuba, expressed gratitude to Nigeria Connect for the transformation of the library, with a promise that the library and all the items donated will judiciously used and well taken care of.
