Nigeria and Brazil have strengthened their long-standing partnership with the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning trade, diplomacy, aviation, finance, and science and technology. The agreements were formalised during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil on Monday, 25 August 2025.
A key agreement is the MoU on biotechnology cooperation, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, in the presence of Presidents Tinubu and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
This pact encompasses biotechnology, bioeconomy, ocean science, space research, renewable energy, digital transformation, and raw materials development.
Chief Nnaji’s delegation, which included NBRDA’s Director General, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, and other senior government officials, also held discussions with the Brazilian Cotton Producers Association (ABRAPA) on technology transfer to support high-yield, sustainable cotton production in Nigeria.
The biotechnology agreement is expected to expand Nigeria’s research frontiers, strengthen the NBRDA’s operational capacity, and reinforce its role in advancing food security, industrial innovation, and bioeconomy development.
It positions Nigeria to harness science and technology more effectively for national progress and global competitiveness.
