Niger gov’s wife seeks awareness, collaboration to curb unsafe mining practices

The wife of Niger State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, has called for strong awareness and collaboration to curb the dangers associated with unregulated and crude methods of mining, not only in the state but also in Nigeria, to avert unnecessary loss of lives and properties of innocent citizens.

The Governor’s wife made the call while disbursing Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s N100 million donation to families of the dynamite explosion at Sabon Pegi in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, while urging residents to desist from stockpiling harmful objects that can kill or injure people at home, asserted that she intends to partner with the ministries of Solid Minerals, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to properly sensitise, educate and inform Nigerlites on the hazards of unregulated mining, which has brought about not only a drop in school enrolment but also other social menaces. She advocated that all hands must be on deck to achieve the goal.

She also assured the people of the area that the administration of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago will continue to prioritise the welfare of Nigerlites, and appreciated the nation’s First Lady for coming to the aid of the Sabon Pegi community over the unfortunate mining explosion that occurred last month.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yunus, commended the efforts of the State Governor and that of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, stating that the effort was timely due to the disaster that occurred.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Mashegu Local Government Council, Hon. Umar Jibrin Igade, reassured the state government that preventive measures would be put in place to avoid any further disaster within and outside the communities.

Additionally, the state government, under Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, has redeemed its financial pledges to the victims.

Relief items distributed included bags of 50 kg rice, maize, salt, vegetable oil, mattresses and blankets.
