NGO to host oratory contest for young Nigerians

Inspire Africa, a social innovative organisation, is set to organise its 2021 public-speaking contest, The Orator, designed to build the oratory, leadership and innovative skills of young leaders between the ages of 18 to 25.

This was made know to Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday by the co-founder and CEO of the organisation, Cynthia Mene.

Mene stated that the essence of the contest is to build young Nigerian leaders by giving them the oratory, leadership and innovative abilities they need to excel.

“Though The Orators Programme is an intensive, in-depth public speaking contest,” Mene said, “you don’t have to be an experienced speaker to apply.”

She noted that the judging criteria for the contest include the following: being coachable, believability, clarity of thought, excellent presentation, and Attitude. “12 successful orators will be selected and invited to participate in the Orators Programme,” Mene added.

The conditions for application include: being a Nigerian undergraduate student; ability to embrace giving and receiving constructive feedback; and participation at the grand finals limited to 12 orators; and willingness to attend the Orators Academy in the chosen location. 

According to Mene, the benefits associated with the contest include: cash prize up to N300,000, mentoring/coaching programmes and training.

Mene stated that the audition of the contest begins 2nd – 3rd of July; the finalist selection process by 5th of July; the online bootcamp by 6th – 8th of July, and the grand finale event by 17th of July. She also stated that the application process can be found from their website.

The trainers and judges for the contest include​​​: Dr Benjamin Wayo, a 2021 Speaker Slam and public speaker; Blessing Mene, the co-founder of Inspire Africa and social entrepreneur; Titi Ojo, a Humphrey Fellow and Lead, The Idea Factory; Chinedu Chidi, Managing Director of Law TV and an investigative journalist.​
