The Lagos State Electricity Law, signed into law by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marks a transformative milestone aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption, expanding energy access, and fostering innovation in the state’s power sector.
The signing ceremony, held at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, was attended by stakeholders including lawmakers, energy leaders, and private sector investors. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the law’s role in addressing Lagos’ growing energy demands, reducing reliance on the national grid, and promoting private sector investments in renewable and off-grid solutions.
“This law represents a bold step toward energy independence and sustainability for Lagos State,” he said, adding that it would lay the foundation for reliable power supply, job creation, and sustainable development.
Key features of the law include the establishment of the Lagos Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) to ensure compliance with standards, protect consumer interests, and encourage innovation. The legislation also prioritizes environmental sustainability by promoting clean and renewable energy initiatives to combat climate change.
Hon. Sabur Akanbi Olowa, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy, lauded the governor’s visionary leadership, describing the law as a model for subnational energy reforms in Nigeria.
