Nestlé, the world’s largest packaged food company, has announced plans to cut 16,000 jobs globally over the next two years as part of a major restructuring aimed at boosting efficiency through automation.
The company said about 12,000 white-collar roles and 4,000 manufacturing and supply chain jobs will be affected. Consultations will be held “where applicable,” according to Thursday’s announcement.
Nestlé, which makes brands such as Nescafé, Cheerios, KitKat, and Rolos, said the job cuts are part of its push for greater “operational efficiency.” The move is expected to save the company around £934 million annually.
However, the impact on Nestlé’s UK operations remains unclear. A spokesperson told Sky News, “At this point in time, we are not in a position to give concrete figures for individual markets.”
Nestlé has factories, distribution centres, and offices across England, Scotland, and Wales, but said it does not have exact figures for its UK workforce. Globally, the company employs about 277,000 people.
Chief Executive Philipp Navratil described the move as “hard but necessary,” adding that the cuts would be made “with respect and transparency.” It is his first major structural decision since taking over in September following the sudden departure of former CEO Laurent Freixe.
“As Nestlé moves forward, we will be rigorous in our approach to resource allocation, prioritising the opportunities and businesses with the highest potential returns,” Navratil said. “We are fostering a culture that embraces a performance mindset, that does not accept losing market share, and where winning is rewarded.”
