The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have announced a new partnership aimed at accelerating recovery and fostering long-term development in Nigeria’s North-East.
The region, grappling with the aftermath of years of Boko Haram insurgency, faces acute challenges, including widespread displacement, damaged infrastructure, and economic devastation.
Speaking during discussions held in Maiduguri on Friday, NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali outlined critical areas of focus for the partnership. These include rapid infrastructure rehabilitation, strengthening healthcare systems, revitalising agriculture, and providing comprehensive support for vulnerable populations.

He stressed the need for a holistic strategy to rebuild the region in this critical time.
“We are committed to combining our deep understanding with the UNDP’s proven expertise to deliver sustainable and impactful solutions in many areas,” Alkali stated.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to working with other partners, like UNDP, to achieve the commission’s mandate based on its master plan.
“The commission has built health, infrastructure, education, housing, and skill acquisition centers in North-Eastern states and has also carried out resettlement and other humanitarian activities to boost regional capacity,” he explained.
The commission promises to work with UNDP to develop the region by creating a more stable and prosperous future for the residents of the region.
UNDP Portfolio Adviser in Nigeria, Innocent Fred, reiterated the organisation’s dedication to supporting the region’s recovery.
He emphasised the importance of building community resilience and promoting long-term, inclusive development.
“Our core aim is to empower the people of the North-East to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. We are focused on fostering tangible progress and sustainable change,” Fred said.
The partnership will concentrate on key sectors such as energy investment, youth empowerment initiatives, and the reconstruction of essential infrastructure.
He called for a sustained commitment and collaborative approach for lasting success.
