In a bid to enhance the security network within the aviation sector, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has trained personnel on Man-Portable Air-Defence Systems (MANPADS) in Abuja.
NCAA trained aviation security staff and representatives of all relevant security agencies working at the airport in lightweight anti-aircraft weapons.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two weeks of training, the Acting Director-General, Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, said participants have acquired some level of competence to deal with MANPADS, which is a threat to both military and civil aviation.
He explained that by implementing mitigating measures, “Nigeria will prevent catastrophic effects on the national economy and even the global economy.
“We must work together if we are going to ensure a secure aviation sector,” he emphasised.
On his part, the Director of Aviation Security, Dr. Omogo Bernard Onwe Chinedu, stated that the NCAA has identified gaps in aviation security and is deliberately working to close those gaps.
The MANPADS and stand-off weapons training was facilitated by the French Civil Aviation Authority.
