NBMA charges participants to third draft policy, says biosafety promotes national development

Participants at the third policy draft and action plan of the national biosecurity workshop in Abuja have been urged to remain open to the new realities as they finalise work on the policy that would guarantee the safety of all Nigerians against bio-agents.

Director-General and Chief Executive officer of the National Biotechnology Agency (NMBA), Dr Rufus Ebegba, said the safety of all Nigerians should guide the participants and make them keep an open mind, as they look through the document, painstakingly.

He said besides the preservation of the nation’s biodiversity, science and technology also promote national development and safety of all concerns.

Ebegba maintained that the last lap of the process was important to provide a safety policy that will guide the interaction of individual and corporate entities in their various engagement with bio-security.

The national biosecurity policy and action plan have been in the works for three years to Safeguard, human health, the environment and the livelihood of the Nigerian people, in relation to any bio- threats.

The two-day multi-stakeholder meeting for the Third National Review and Validation meeting of the Draft National Bio-security policy and Action Plan was organized to review the document.

The document reads in part: “The essence of putting this policy in place is as a result of the increasing need by state and non-state actors to acquire and work with pathogens micro-organisms biological toxins and other biological trances for both positive and negative reasons.

“For instance, The 2001 Anthrax attacks in the United States and the covid-19 pandemic with a controversial origin.”

The document further stated that it would guide “the approach and how scientists conduct such and share this research result and increased international awareness of the threat of bioterrorism.”
