The newly sworn-in President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, has announced the formation of the Citizens’ Liberties Committee (CLC), appointing prominent human rights advocates Barrister Deji Adeyanju, Inibehe Effiong, Maxwell Opara, and others to spearhead this initiative.
The announcement was made during the NBA’s annual conference in Lagos, following Osigwe’s inaugural address as he officially took over the leadership from his predecessor, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, on Thursday.
Elected in July 2024, Osigwe has committed to advancing the NBA’s role as a formidable force in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
In his address, Osigwe pledged that under his leadership, the NBA would vigorously uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of Nigerians, stating, “The rule of law must be upheld, and the rights of Nigerians must be protected.”
The newly established CLC, chaired by Nuhu Egya with Malachy Ugwumadu serving as Alternate Chair, will work in collaboration with NBA branches to ensure monthly inspections of police stations and detention facilities across Nigeria.
This effort, in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, aims to promote transparency and accountability within the justice system.
Adeyanju, expressing his gratitude for the appointment, remarked, “I am honoured to be appointed to the Citizens’ Liberties Committee and appreciate the trust placed in me by President Osigwe.
“This committee represents a crucial step towards reinforcing the protection of human rights and civil liberties in Nigeria.”
He further emphasised the importance of the committee’s mission amidst rising concerns over citizens’ rights, stating, “Our mission will be to advocate for justice, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that the voices of the marginalised are heard. Together, we will strive to create a society where every individual’s rights are respected and protected.”
Adeyanju also called on legal professionals to join the collective effort, underscoring the need for unity in the pursuit of equality and justice.
“Collaborative efforts are essential for meaningful change,” he affirmed, pledging to work diligently alongside his colleagues to address the pressing issues facing citizens and foster a culture of human rights across the nation.
