The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has demanded urgent action from the Ghanaian government to protect Nigerian students and citizens in Ghana, amid rising xenophobic tensions and protests in the country.
NAUS Deputy National President, Comr. Meshach Anthony Iyanuoluwa expressed deep concern over the recent protests in Ghana, where placards bearing inflammatory inscriptions against Nigerians were displayed. “This obviously is not merely a protest; it is an indictment of our collective humanity,” he stated.
The association demands that the Ghanaian government publicly reject xenophobic sentiments, guarantee the safety and dignity of all Nigerians, and provide a robust security presence around educational institutions and Nigerian residential communities.
NAUS gives the Nigerian government 72 hours to take concrete actions to protect Nigerian students and citizens, failing which the association will mobilise across Nigeria in defence of its members. “We will not hesitate to shut down Ghanaian linked establishments in our cities,” Comr. Iyanuoluwa warned.

The NAUS leader stressed that Nigerian students in Ghana are not the enemy, but rather young people seeking education and a better life.
“They are brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, fathers, and mothers,” he said, adding that it is the responsibility of both governments to ensure their safety and well-being.
In addition to the Ghanaian government, NAUS also called on the Nigerian government to take a more proactive role in protecting its citizens abroad.
The association demands that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) work together to ensure the safety and dignity of Nigerians in Ghana.
The situation has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians, with many calling for swift action to protect the country’s citizens abroad.
As the deadline set by NAUS approaches, it remains to be seen how the Ghanaian government will respond to the demands.
