The Senate on Wednesday refused to confirm the nomination of Dr. Nnanna Uzor Kalu as a member of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).
The younger Kalu is a brother to former governor of Abia State, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu.
The former governor represents Abia-North Senatorial District and currently chairs the Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission.
The Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, which screened the nominees for the NASC’ positions, recommended that Kalu’s confirmation should be put on hold, a decision that was unanimously passed by senators.
The Chairman of the committee, Sen. Oluwole Fasuyi (Ekiti-North), while presenting the report on the screening to the Senate, said the younger Kalu had a pending petition against him before the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.
The panel told the Senate to drop the name of the nominee pending the conclusion of the investigation of the petition, a recommendation that was fully supported by senators present on Wednesday.
Senator Kalu was not in the chamber on Wednesday when the Senate took its decision.
In all, 12 nominees were confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday.
They were, Dr Saviour Enyiekere as chairman of the commission (South-South); Suleiman Hunkuyi, (North-West); Yusuf Yusuf; (North-West); Aminu Malle (North-East); Alhaji Mahmud (North-East); Mark Terso (North-Central); Salihu Balogun (North-Central); Taiwo Oluga (South-West); and Afeez Ipesa-Balogun; (South-West).
