Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura

THE Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), has earmarked an estimated budget of N800 Million for the conduct of 2017 Local Government Elections in the state.

The Chairman of NASIEC Dr Abdullahi Modibo who disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday, said, the commission would release the election timetable in a couple of weeks.

He said that the commission is also mapping out plans to approach the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to amend the local government law.

“We want the House of Assembly to amend the tenure of local government chairmen from one to two years, we also want declaration of result to be done by the Chief Returning Officer of the commission and not at the polling unit.”

“We also want to amend the law that would allow parties substitute candidates who dies in the course of the election to avoid the confusion that happened in Kogi state,” the NASIEC Chairman said.

Tribune Online reports that, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, had last week issued a legislative order to Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura to conduct local government elections, following the expiration of the tenure of chairmen of the Interim management Committee of the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
