The chairman, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, who doubles as vice chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON-Kano Central), Yusuf Shuaibu Imam, has denied allegations that the council sold a graveyard in Hotoro Kudu to a private individual.
Speaking in Kano, Imam described the claim as false and unfounded, warning those behind it to retract their statements or face legal action.
His reaction followed concerns raised by residents of Hotoro Kudu, led by the district head, Alhaji Ashiru Abubakar, who reported that an individual was parading himself as the new owner of the cemetery land.
The chairman stressed that neither the council nor the state government had sanctioned any sale of the land, noting that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf maintains a strict policy against the sale of public lands, particularly sacred spaces like graveyards.
Imam explained that the Hotoro Kudu community had written to the council requesting relocation of the burial site due to its rocky terrain and the fact that no burials had taken place there, as he clarified that no approval had been granted for the relocation.
The council boss reiterated his commitment to protecting community assets and warned those peddling misinformation to desist immediately or risk legal consequences.
In his remarks, the district head commended the chairman for his prompt intervention and lauded his ongoing efforts to rehabilitate burial sites across the local government, including filling sunken graves with topsoil to ensure dignity for the departed.
