The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council (JCC), Lagos State chapter, has partnered with the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) to enhance student engagement in the development of water transportation.
The partnership aims to create awareness about the safety and effectiveness of water transportation in Lagos State. LASWA, as the regulatory body overseeing boat operations, passenger safety, and jetty maintenance, provided the students with firsthand insight into its operations during a sensitization tour on Thursday.
Led by NANS (JCC) Lagos chairman, AbdulQuadri Abdul-Raheem, the students’ delegation included student union government presidents, speakers, and transport department heads from various campuses across the state. LASWA’s General Manager, Oluwadamola Emmanuel, led the agency’s team during the tour.
According to a statement made available to Nigerian Tribune, the forum allowed students to assess LASWA’s initiatives aimed at improving water transportation.

Abdul-Raheem emphasized that students would sustain the sensitization campaign to promote safety practices among boat operators and passengers while advocating for the overall improvement of Lagos’ water transport system.
“The effective use of waterways for transporting passengers and goods will ease the pressure on road transportation and boost the economy,” he noted.
He stressed the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, such as the mandatory use of life jackets and the avoidance of overcrowding, while ensuring that jetties remain in good condition.
Highlighting the role of youth in national development, Abdul-Raheem reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to advocacy efforts that contribute to the progress of Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
