NACOMYO appeals to FG, INEC on palliative, Kogi, Bayelsa, Imo polls

THE National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has appealed to the Federal Government to immediately implement the monthly cash transfer of N35,000 to workers across board for the next six months as part of measures to reduce the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

This appeal is contained in a communique after NACOMYO’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja from October 13 to October 15, 2023.

In the communique signed by the National Secretary General, Alhaj Mas’ud Akintola and the National Publicity Secretary, Malam Muhammad Abubakar Sendirde, the organisation described the introduction of palliatives to cushion the hardships as a welcome development, but noted that the palliatives do not constitute a permanent remedy to the problems.

Moreover, it urged state governments to ensure equitable distribution of the palliatives and see to it that they reach the most vulnerable members of the society.

NACOMYO asked the Federal Government to intensify the maintenance of “our refineries to put a halt to the continued importation of refined crude oil,” adding that reduction of tuition fees in all tertiary institutions in the country should be embarked upon by federal and state governments to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

It said: “Elections generally in Nigeria are associated with a lot of apprehensions. We appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to not only provide a level playing ground for all stakeholders in the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo  states, but to conduct free, fair and credible polls in the states.

“Politicians should also play the game according to the rule and should avoid all forms of violence before, during and after the elections.”

NACOMYO noted that President Tinubu had been unfair to Muslims in federal appointments so far made and therefore implored the president to address the imbalance in subsequent appointments in the interest of fairness.

It decried on the problem of drugs and substances abuse among youths, calling on parents to be alive to their responsibilities while urging government at all levels to intensify efforts to curb the activities of drug dealers and peddlers.

NACOMYO also decried the attacks on civilian targets and what it called the double standard of Western powers in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian war, calling for an end to the war and respect for the sovereignty of the Palestinian nation.
