I have been battling with Asthma for the past five years. Initially it seemed as if the anti asthma drugs I am using were working but now, I don’t have any relief from them. Kindly advise me on what next to do.

Evaluation of patients with difficult-to-treat asthma should begin with confirmation or reconfirmation of the diagnosis. Apart from re confirming their diagnosis, it is equally important for Asthma patients to also see their doctors to re assess their medications. Comprehensive education must include not only information about appropriate use of medications, but also the teaching and assessment of optimal inhaler technique. Even the simple-to-use dry powder inhalers can be mishandled. In addition, it is important to evaluate whether environmental factors in patients’ homes or workplaces may be worsening their asthma symptoms. In the home, dust mites are ubiquitous and many patients with asthma are skin-test positive to dust mite antigen. Pet dander is also an important factor in producing asthma instability. The workplace is another primary source of substances that induce or worsen asthma. You will therefore benefit from allergy tests in your home and work place.
