A woman, Omobodunde, has brought a divorce suit against her husband, Bosun, at the Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, alleging that he was irresponsible, jobless and in the habit of beating her.
Omobodunde said that Bosun had always shirked his responsibility towards her and their children.
She stated that his presence as a breadwinner was never felt in the home.
Omobodunde added that his conduct in the home worsened after he was thrown out of his job almost three years ago.
The plaintiff stated that the defendant became cruel, violent, and irrational in his ways.
According to Omobodunde, Bosun always accused her of his woes and would descend on her with punches.
She added that there were times he chased her out of the house with a cutlass, even in the middle of the night.
The plaintiff stated that she thought it wise to move out of her matrimonial home before her husband chopped off her head.
Omobodunde pleaded for the custody of their two children so that she could take adequate care of them.
Bosun failed to make an appearance in court despite being served court summonses.
Omobodunde, giving her evidence said, “My husband and I did not have a wedding ceremony. He neither paid my bride price.
“I started living with him after we dated, and he impregnated me.
“My lord, the man that I married is quite different from the one I dated.
“My husband was caring, loving, and generous while we were dating.
“I counted myself lucky to have such a man doting on me.
“But his behaviour changed after we started living together as husband and wife. Then I realised he had been pretending all this while.
“My husband never saw it as his responsibility to feed me.
“He always asked that I sought myself out any time I asked for feeding allowance.
“I took up the challenge of running the home from the outset of our marriage.
“My husband, despite not leaving a dime for food, would always expect to be served.
“Things got worse when our children started coming.
“We have just two children, but he neglected us all.
“Hell was let loose after my husband was thrown out of job.
“He became frustrated and started acting irrationally.
“My husband always accused me of being behind his woes and would descend on me with punches.
“I nurse body aches and wounds on a regular basis.
“My husband became so cruel that I started dreading having him around me.
“His behaviour got worse. He turned violent and would chase me about with a cutlass any time we had a heated argument.
“My husband would chase me out of the house sometimes in the middle of the night, not caring to know what happened to me.
“I decided to move out of his house before he had my head chopped off.
“He has since denied me access to our children who are underage and looking malnourished.
“My lord, I pray this honourable court to grant me custody of our two children so that I can give them proper attention.”
The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case for judgment.
