Babalola Israel known as BigIsreal is an undergraduate studying English and literary studies at Bamidele Olumilua University who became a viral sensation when he was called out of a concert crowd by Gospel sensation, Bidemi Olaoba to perform one of his hit tracks. Friday Treat caught up with him recently and he spoke about his love for gospel music, why Bidemi Olaoba remains his spiritual mentor and three wishes he hopes will happen for him soonest.
What were you trained as professionally?
I am a trained photographer and cinematographer. I have been covering events professionally for more than a year.
How did you develop your love for music?
My love for music started from being the lead singer at assemblies in primary to secondary school. I usually don’t have to think too much before I sang. It came naturally and I noticed people loved me and will just start dancing even when there are no real drums. Since then, I enjoyed singing even especially when given the opportunity to do so in church
You recently trended when you were called from the crowd and performed with Bidemi Olaoba recently. Tell us about that experience…
A lot of people thought it was pre-planned but that wasn’t correct. Minister Bidemi Olaoba didn’t even know me before then. However before then, he once called me up to share his stage and I messed up, but this time I was prepared.
That day I trekked from Bodija to Liberty stadium. I didn’t have transport fare and I didn’t want to ask my boss, but I just needed to be there. My energy was unmatched and that is because of my love for Minister Bidemi Olaoba. I don’t know why he called me, but I was ready and I gave it my everything… The truth is if the engineer didn’t switch off my mic, I could go on for the next hour singing his songs…
I count it a big honor to be called to share his stage, as a matter of fact, I have been checking for his comment or repost for weeks. I just want a message or a like from Bidemi Olaoba. I don’t even read peoples comments that much, I just desire Minister Bidemi’s own . I love him passionately and there is no song of his I don’t know.
How has it been since then?
I became popular actually and I see random strangers that just want to snap with me; my likes and following on Instagram and ticktok grew too all because of this occurrence.
What are your plans for 2025?
I just want God to direct my ways.
I am in school presently and I want to sing while also facing my academics.
Who do you consider your mentors/influences?
No other person than Bidemi Olaoba
If you had three wishes, what would they be?
- Get a repost from Bidemi Olaoba
- Receive a call from Bidemi Olaoba or have a meeting with him
- Join Minister Bidemis band… Back up or whatever, I just want to learn from him
