My grandfather, who is over 90 years of age, has been behaving abnormally especially at night when the house is usually quiet. The last time, he almost set the house on fire when he said he wanted to light a candle even when there was electricity supply. A friend said that this could be a sign of Dementia. Please let me know what we can do about this.

Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a group of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease which accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases, there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies. Treatment of dementia depends on its cause. In the case of most progressive dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease, there is no cure and no treatment that slows or stops its progression. But there are drug treatments that may temporarily improve symptoms. Even though your grandpa will benefit from a proper medical evaluation in order to ascertain his actual ailment, it is important to have somebody in the house to keep an eye on him.
