THE Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN), Ibadan branch, has disbursed the sum of N2 million in cash and equipment as zakat to 35 beneficiaries for the year 2021.
The chairman of the branch, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ganiy, on Tuesday, at the association’s fifth zakat distribution ceremony, said the beneficiaries were selected from among scores of people who applied to the association for zakat this year.
Alhaji Ganiy appealed to the recipients to use the funds and equipment appropriately.
The chairman of the management committee of the humanitarian arm of the association, MAN Zakat and Sadaqat Administration Programme (MANZAP), Alhaji AbdulWahab AbdulLateef Adisa (Olokuta), described zakat as the most neglected of the pillars of Islam but noted that its significance in the life of Muslims could not be overemphasised.
According to Alhaji Olokuta, MAN, Ibadan branch, acknowledged this importance and established MANZAP as an institution to manage and administer zakat funds.
He said: “Since the establishment, we have been recording success in the collection and distribution of zakat funds for the provision of debt relief for Muslims, empowerment and uplift of the needy, assistance of stranded travellers, inmates, medical/educational support and in other causes of Allah.
“Since inception, MANZAP has made disbursements both in cash and equipment to quite a number of beneficiaries.
“We are using this medium to appreciate our zakat sadaqat payers and pray Allah to increase your wealth and reward you immensely in this world and hereafter.”
He called on other wealthy Muslims to pay their zakat and sadaqat to MANZAP, promising that the funds would be administered in accordance with dictates of Allah.
The MANZAP chairman encouraged the beneficiaries to make use of the funds/equipment judiciously so that so that they too could become zakat payers soon.
At the event which was chaired by the chairman of the Ibadan Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustapha Bayo Oyero, the guest lecturer, Dr Abdul-Azeez Hashim of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Oyo, urged Muslims to follow the injunction of Allah by exhibiting empathy towards their underprivileged brothers and sisters and other disadvantaged members of the society.
According to Dr Hashim, who is also the Chief Imam of the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) in Oyo State, in Islam, there is also no shame in being a beneficiary of charity.
He urged the beneficiaries to utilise their zakat and make it their utmost wish to also become zakat payers in no distant future.
The president of MAN, Alhaji Tajudeen Ojikutu, commended the Ibadan branch for blazing the way to the administration of zakat within the organisation.
Alhaji Ojikutu, represented by his deputy, Professor Dhikrullah Yagboyaju, emphasised that the branch had recorded many firsts in the history of the association.
He said what the branch was doing in terms of improving the economy of families was tantamount to improving the economy of the entire society.
