A murder investigation has been launched after a 45-year-old man was shot and killed in the early hours of Tuesday in Stoke Newington, north London.
Police and paramedics were called shortly after midnight following reports of gunfire in the area, which is in the borough of Hackney.
When officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Lime bike was left abandoned on the pavement nearby, while paramedics worked on the victim across the road. The man’s next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Witnesses reported hearing at least four gunshots followed by shouting and screaming. One person said they saw someone running up Stoke Newington High Street shortly after the shooting. No arrests have been made so far.
The area has been cordoned off, with part of the high street closed and buses diverted while officers continue their investigation.
Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads policing in the area, said: “Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man.
“We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however we do believe this to be an isolated incident at this stage of the investigation with no wider risk to the general public.
“Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area, along with a crime scene, as we carry out our enquiries. We thank them for their patience and cooperation at this time.
“We urge anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information that could assist us, to come forward as soon as possible.”
This incident comes less than two months after the fatal stabbing of Annabel Rook in the same neighbourhood.
