The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, led by Chairman Comrade Samson Nwafor, visited a motherless baby home, Holy Innocent Motherless Babies Home, in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The union also visited the Old People’s Home within the capital city.
The visit of the union to the homes was part of its activities to mark this year’s Press Week.
Items donated to the homes during the visit include food, tubers of yam, toiletries, diapers, detergent, and beverages, among others.
At the Holy Innocent Motherless Babies Home, Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Samson Nwafor, said the union visited the home to show the children love.
He prayed to God to continue to protect the children and grant them good health so they could attend to what God had destined for them.
“There are lots of activities that we use to mark our press week. We have done a lot of them, and today was dedicated to visits to motherless babies’ homes and old people’s homes where we have less privileged people.
“We use this period to celebrate with everybody, including the rich and the poor in society. Here, we said we should come and celebrate with them.
“Our union wishes them well; we don’t have much, but this is our widow’s mite, and we pray that the children who will make use of the items we brought to them will have good health, grow, and become whatever God has destined them to be in life. For them, this is why we are here to do the little we can”, he stated.
While receiving the union, Rev. Sister Fides Nwachukwu, who is among those taking care of the children, commended the union for the visit and urged other well-to-do individuals and organisations to emulate NUJ.
“This visit is a very good one; it is a nice one, and I pray that God will continue to bless you and your families to continue to remember the less privileged in our society.
“The children can’t talk, but in spirit, they are very happy, and as they are smiling, so will your family continue to smile”, she said.
Nwachukwu noted that the Holy Innocent Motherless Babies Home was established in April of this year and that it currently has 10 babies under its care who are very tender, with one of them being 8 months old as the oldest.
