The Executive Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Council, Niger State, Hon. Abdullahi Jibrin Muregi, has praised Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for providing ₦1 billion as an intervention fund for victims of the recent flood disaster in the area. He also commended the delivery of 30 out of the 50 promised trucks of grain intended to reduce the hardship faced by those affected.
In the Chairman’s absence, the Secretary of the Council, Alhaji Dauda Liman, represented him during an interview with the press at the Council Secretariat in Mokwa.
Alhaji Liman, who also chaired the local relief distribution committee, stated that the disaster occurred between 28–29 May this year and caught residents unawares, noting that Mokwa town lacks rivers or river channels. He attributed the severity of the flooding to forces beyond their understanding.
He confirmed that 458 households had been identified and each received ₦1 million. Additionally, 524 destroyed houses and shops were recorded, with owners receiving ₦500,000 each. Compensation of ₦1 million was allocated to the next of kin of 138 deceased victims. ([Vanguard News][1], [The Guardian Nigeria][2])
Liman clarified that some flood victims have not received assistance because they fled Mokwa due to trauma and returned only after distributions had begun, hence missing registration. ([Vanguard News][1])
He also acknowledged cases of false claims, citing one individual who admitted she had been away for three years and returned solely to benefit from the relief efforts.
While stressing the challenges, he commended officials from NSEMA, NEMA, NGOs, religious bodies, traditional institutions, and organizations like the North‑South Power Company for their support in identifying and aiding victims.

Liman appealed to Governor Bago to release the remaining 20 trucks of grain and additional funds for those not yet assisted. He expressed optimism that, once verification of additional victims is complete, the final aid would be released.
He rated the state government’s overall performance in the relief effort at 70%, reflecting significant achievements amid notable challenges.
