The 36 newly qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists of Edo State University, Uzairue, have been inducted by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
Performing the induction and oath-taking for the 2022/2023 graduates of the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programme at the University, the Registrar/CEO of the Council, Dr Tosan Erhabor, congratulated the graduate students for their success in their final examinations.
He advised the scientists to cultivate the habit of inter-professional collaboration with other health personnel, explaining that medical services are teamwork aimed at producing the best results for patients.
Dr. Erhabor, represented at the 3rd MLSCN ceremony of the institution by Uchunm Gregory, Director of Scientists Regulations and Discipline, commended the University for the strides made in the MLS Department and the relationship between the institution and the council.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, congratulated the inductees and revealed that the remarkable achievement of the institution’s MLS department is its full accreditation status.
He said that the journey of excellence and commitment in the field of MLS in the institution has been extraordinary and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from the faculty, students, and administrative staff.
Prof. Aluyor also mentioned the state-of-the-art laboratory and equipment, including the molecular laboratory, available to train students. The department has consistently invested in upgrading and maintaining modern facilities, ensuring that students have access to the latest technology, thereby enhancing their practical skills and knowledge.
During the induction lecture titled “Negligence in Contemporary Practice of Medical Laboratory Sciences in Nigeria: A System Failure,” Prof. Peter Achukwu from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, emphasised the importance of MLS practice being done in conformity with a duty to the common man. He also stressed the need for periodic reappraisal of practice and the assessment of fitness to practice.
