The Federal Ministry of Youth on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for the training of 5,000 youths in area of data protection and privacy.
While the Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, signed for the ministry, the National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, signed on behalf of the Commission.
Olawande said he was delighted that the process which was started to create another level of opportunity for young Nigerians has now reached a remarkable point.
He said with the signing of MoU, the Ministry would work aggressively to build capacity and create awareness in the data protection sector in the country.
The Minister stated that, with the technical expertise available to the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), the objective of partnership is to train 5,000 youth in data protection and privacy.
He listed some of the benefits to include job creation and values to be added to national development.
He said: “We will work together to create the necessary awareness in the area of data protection and privacy, especially among young people. But this partnership benefit even those that are no more youth.
“Specifically, our staff in the ministry here also stand a chance to benefit from the training and capacity building in data protection, which would lead to the safety of government information and enhance privacy and confidentiality,” he added.
The National Commissioner, NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, on his part commended the Minister for his passion for youth development issues, recalling that the journey leading to the signing of the memorandum of understanding started when the Olawande approached the Commission on the need to build the capacity of young Nigerians on data protection and privacy.
