Minister of State for Youth Development, Mr. Olawande Wisdom, has commended the founder of BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, for contributing immensely to the development of the girl child and raising the bar of excellence.
Wisdom, however, called for support for BEMORE and other organisations in the course of the Nigerian women and girls.
The minister gave the commendation while speaking during the opening ceremony of the BEMORE 2024 Summer Bootcamp in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. He noted that the initiative by Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is something that is capable of nurturing girls to become virtuous women in society.
In her address, Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu said, “It is indeed a matter of joy that despite all odds, BEMORE Summer Bootcamp 2024 is holding in Ibadan, Oyo State, a city that I can call home and feel safe in.
“That we pulled off #BEMOREOYO2024 is simply remarkable, as not a few thought that BEMORE had gone with the wind. It was a journey of courage and resilience as I kept reminding myself why BEMORE was founded.
“We all know that we live in a patriarchal society where extreme misogynistic tendencies are exhibited so glaringly and you begin to accept that women and girls are lesser beings. Part of BEMORE’s mission is to demonstrate that technological skills are gender-neutral and put a lie that such skills are exclusive to men and boys.
“With the introduction of BEMORE Summer Bootcamp since 2017 and using STEM + E (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics plus Entrepreneurship) as the entry point to give them a headstart in order to make them maximise their full potential, we have evidence-based examples of the transformations BEMORE can bring in young girls showcased by some of BEMORE alumni.”
In his address, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Odu’a Investments, Mr. Abdulrahman Yinusa, urged participants to take full advantage of the knowledge imparted at the training.
He commended the organisers and mentors for investing in the future of girls through technological initiatives that would drive the future towards sustainability.
The event featured a training session by the Red Cross Society on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
This was followed up by a book launch entitled “The History of BEMORE, A Historical Voyage by Esther Michael.”
