THE Shipping, Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SSACFEA) has appealed to the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to direct their protest towards Hull Blyth Shipping Company following its refusal to comply with the implementation of a new N200,000 Minimum Wage agreement signed recently in Lagos.
Recall that despite a new minimum wage agreement reached between SSACFEA and MWUN, Messrs. Hull Blyth Nigeria has refused to comply with the agreement, prompting the workers to threaten to shut down all port’s terminals and oil platforms.
Speaking on the development in Lagos during the first anniversary of the appointment of the Nigerian Shippers Council Executive Secretary, the Chairman of SSACFEA, Boma Alabi (SAN) said that the association members remain committed to the implementation of the new minimum wage agreement.
According to the SSACFEA Chairman, “We need to understand how crucial our human element is and that we cannot work without them. Majority of the shipping companies are compliant to the new minimum wage agreement.
“For the one or two that have refused to comply, our comrade here knows what to do. Please, if you want to shut them down, don’t shut down the compliant operators.
“Don’t picket those who are compliant with the new agreement when shutting down those who have not been compliant.”
On his part, the NSC Boss, Pius Akutah promised to set up a monitoring and enforcement committee to observe the implementation of the new minimum wage agreement.
“We might have to set up a monitoring and enforcement committee comprising the Shippers Council, the SSACFEA and the MWUN. The committee will be saddled with the task of ensuring that the new agreement is being implemented. Our target is to ensure that we have a maritime industry that remains calm.”
