The Joint Task Force of the Nigerian Army in the Niger Delta, code names Operation Delta Safe (ODS), have confirmed the killing of one of its personnel, promising to ensure the perpetrators of the heinous attack are brought to book.
In a statement signed and issued by the spokesman of ODS, Major Jonah Unuakhalu, preliminary Investigation is ongoing to identify the person’s or groups behind the attack.
Parts of the statement read “at about 3 am today, unknown gunmen attacked own gunboat deployed close to the house of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The vigilant troops repelled the attack while some of the assailants escaped with gunshot wounds. However, during the attack, one soldier paid the supreme price and another wounded in action. The wounded has been evacuated to the hospital and responding to treatment.

“The people are advised to go about their lawful businesses as the security of lives and properties is a priority to Operation Delta Safe during the Yuletide period and beyond.”
In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, the Paramount ruler of Otuaba Community, Chief Samuel Obum, condemned the act saying the perpetrators are enemies of development of the Niger Delta Region and should be brought to judgement.
He said “when the incident that lasted about 30 minutes happened, we were restless until day break when the military authorities came to the scene of the crime. The former president and other top government functionaries have also visited the community to assure us of our safety.”
