Mechanic docked over alleged cultism

A mechanic, Daodu Mikaila, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society, known as “Eiye.”

Mikaila, 28, residing at Ikorodu, near Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that the defendant committed the offences at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 26 at Ibese-Idioro in Ikorodu.

According to her, a member of the community reported at the police station that a group of boys, suspected to be members of Eiye Cult were disturbing the peace in the community and committing various crimes.

Olaluwoye said that the anti-cultism unit of the police found out that the group was having a meeting and raided the area.

She told the court that the defendant was the only one arrested and that his accomplices escaped arrest during the raid.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 411 and 42 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 42 (a) stipulates a three-year jail term for offences relating to an unlawful society, while 411 carries two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

The defendant was granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until June 2 for mention.
