MDCN inducts 16 Igbinedion varsity graduates 

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), has inducted 16 Medical Graduates of Igbinedion University, Okada, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State as certified doctors.

The induction ceremony which took place at the university in Okada on Tuesday, it was learnt, was part of the Institution’s efforts to enhance the healthcare delivery system in the country.

Administering the oath on the inductees, the Registrar, of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, charged the new medical doctors to keep to the tenets of integrity, and professionalism and exercise caution at all times.

Represented by Dr Henry Okwukwenye, the MDCN Registrar, advised the doctors not to be worried about the rigours of the profession as they are summative through professionalism and hard work.

In his welcome remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, said that the ceremony was a momentous occasion marking the years of hard work, dedication, perseverance and transformation on the part of the doctors.

He added the new doctors who he described as diligent, no doubt, have compassion and are ready to serve humanity.

Prof. Ezemonye who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Raphael Adeghe, disclosed that the ceremony was the 18th induction of medical students since the establishment of the institution.

The VC further informed that the first batch of doctors of the same set was inducted in October 2023, noting that the institution was not oblivious to the current challenges facing the healthcare delivery system in the country.

He listed the challenges to include; a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals such as medical doctors, nurses and other supporting staff.

”As always, our university is committed to partnering with the Medical Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, in its current drive to expand access to medical training as a response towards mitigating some of those challenges.

”There is no gainsaying that the field of medicine is dynamic and ever-evolving, I therefore urge you to embrace the opportunity for continuous learning and growth”, he said 

The VC counselled the new medical doctors to uphold the values of integrity, compassion and excellence which define the institution’s laid down objectives.

The oath-taking/induction ceremony also featured a guest lecturing on the topic:  ”Life As A Doctor” which was delivered intellectually by a renowned Medical Physician/Cardiologist Emeritus Professor Austin Obasohan.

The Guest Lecturer and former Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH,  stressed the need for the medical doctors to see their induction as a duty to humanity and to remain good ambassadors in the course of carrying out their civic responsibilities.

He emphasised the need for medical doctors to take up the challenges of life to improve in their day-to-day pursuit of their ambition whether in Nigeria or outside the shore of this country, insisting they must be relied upon by family members, wives, associates, co-staff and others.

The Provost, of the College of Health Sciences of the University, Professor Dominic Osaghae and the Dean, the School of Clinical Medicine, Dr Imesidayo Eboreime-Oikeh, commended the resilience and comportment of the inducted medical doctors while in the University studying.
