A Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, on Monday sentenced 22-year-old man, Abubakar Shuaibu, to 6 months in prison and 10 strokes of the cane for stealing a plasma television.
Shuaibu was arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking and theft.
The judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad-Goma, however, gave the convict an option of N 4,000 fine on each charge.
“The 10 strokes of cane will serve as a reminder for you not to repeat such crime,” he ruled.

Shuabiu who resides at Lokoja Road, Riagasa area of Kaduna was convicted after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The convict, a phone repairer, however, pleaded for leniency.
“I followed my friend, Alanta, to a house where we broke into, he jumped over the fence, while I waited outside; he stole the TV and gave me to sell.
“My lord this is my first time of stealing and it won’t happen again,” he pleaded.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Aliyu Ibrahim, said that Shuaibu was arrested on April 19 at old Panteka Market in Kaduna, while trying to sell the stolen television set.
“He confessed that he was not the only one that stole the television, but his accomplice, one Alanta is currently at large,
“They broke into one Murtala Shehu’s house, at Trade Fair area and stole his TV,” he said.
The prosecutor said that offences contravened Sections 117,178 and 139 of the Sharia Penal Code of Kaduna State.
