Man allegedly sells fake gold necklace for N500,000

A 33-year-old man, Abdullahi Abubakar, who allegedly sold a fake gold necklace to another for N500,000, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Abubakar, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

Police Prosecutor, Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in July, at Aiye Junction in Isolo area of Lagos.

Emuerhi said that Abubakar fraudulently obtained the sum of N500,000 from one Mr Abubakar Isah, and sold a fake necklace to him.

“Abubakar collected N500, 000 from Isah and sold a fake necklace to him claiming it was gold,” he said.

According to him, the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The offences contravene Sections 287 and 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 287 provides three years imprisonment for stealing while Section 323 prescribes seven years for conspiracy to defraud.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused N200, 000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The magistrate said that the sureties should be gainfully employed, have property in Lagos State and possess evidence of two years’ tax payment to the state government.

She adjourned the case until Nov. 29.
