Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, made a charge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, urging him to allocate more funds to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to enhance its effective operation.
The monarch conveyed this message while receiving the zone I zonal commander of the NDLEA, Mrs Titus-Awogbuyi Joyce Oluwatoyin, and her team at his palace. He emphasized that providing adequate funding for the agency would encourage it to carry out its duties efficiently.
Expressing his concern over the proliferation of drug addicts in Nigeria, the traditional ruler highlighted the need to revitalize rehabilitation centres across the nation to reintegrate drug victims into society.
He stated, “These measures will save many young individuals from the path of uselessness and lead them to a path of usefulness. Oluwo called on wealthy individuals to extend helping hands to the agency.”
“Drug addiction is a pandemic killing more people than coronavirus and Boko Haram combined. The menace must be addressed through the collaborative efforts of NDLEA officers, the government, and society.”
“The Federal Government, led by President Ahmed Tinubu, should consider providing more funding for the NDLEA to enhance the effective operation and encourage officers to discharge their duties efficiently.”
“President Tinubu should further consider revitalising rehabilitation centres across the nation to ensure repented addicts are managed and incorporated into society. This step will rescue most of them from the streets of uselessness and integrate them into useful roles.”
“Wealthy individuals should also assist the agency morally and financially to address drug-fighting and checkmating,” he concluded.
