The Senate of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) at its 130th meeting considered the recommendation of its Board for Family Medicine and approved the full-scale accreditation for the training of resident doctors in the family medicine department of Maitama District Hospital for five years.
The full accreditation is for five years, to train three senior residents and nine junior residents in family medicine at Maitama District Hospital of the Federal Capital Territory.
This is contained in a letter signed by the College Registrar, Dr Fatiu Abiola Arogundade. According to the letter, the panels concerning the programmes and facilities in place at Maitama District Hospital and the Senate have approved that Maitama District Hospital should be awarded full accreditation.
This has affirmed the assurance given by the Mandate Secretary, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, on the numerous achievements to be recorded in the Federal Capital Territory under the administration of Barr. Nyesom Wike in the health care sector.
Speaking of the Stride, the Medical Director of Maitama District Hospital, Dr. Igbinovia Imuetinyan, explained that Maitama Hospital has basically been training up services, not only in tertiary care but also in advancing the quality of doctors in the hospital. One of the ways the hospital does that is by training doctors and consulting specialists.
However, in the Department of Family Medicine, there was only partial accreditation. This is the first time in the history of Maitama District Hospital that it is getting full accreditation for family medicine from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The management of the hospital is delighted with the ward for family medicine and the accreditation given to the hospital. The development is part of the things put in place by the present administration to improve service delivery in the FCT health sector.
The administration of Barr. Nyesom Wike has always maintained that the quality of service delivery in the health sector is as good as the quality of the doctors. It is on this basis that the mandate secretary thought it was in the best interest of the FCT residents to improve the quality of the health practitioners, which is part of the job satisfaction of the doctors, while at the same time delivering very good services to the FCT public.
Dr. Igbinovia added that the hospital was initially given partial accreditation for two years, but now it has been given full accreditation for five years. As a routine, when they start, they will normally come to look at what the hospital is doing as usual, practice, and test drive to see how well the hospital is doing before the full accreditation.
