A prominent human rights activist and anti-corruption crusader in Edo State, Dr Osadolor Ochei, has lauded members of the Nigerian Senate for refusing to confirm Mr Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Dr Ochei, who is the executive director of Achievers Organization, in an interview with journalists in Benin City, said Mr Magu was unsuitable and unfit to be a member of any anti-graf agency, not to talk of heading the EFCC.
He stated that the EFCC as an important anti-corruption agency should not be left in hands of someone, who had been indicted by another federal security agency, adding that “Mr. Magu is not ready or capable of fighting corruption holistically.”
He said, “The Senate did the right thing by rejecting Mr. Magu as the EFCC substantive chairman because his hands are not clean as he was seriously indicted by the report of the Department of State Security (DSS).
“Indeed, if his hands are clean, he will not be shielding the former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from investigation over alleged monumental looting of the state resources during his eight years rule of the state”, he added.
Recall, that two anti-corruption crusaders and human rights activists in Edo State, Dr. Osadolor Ochei and Mr Kola Edokpayi, had in October, 2016, petitioned the EFCC, accusing former governor Adams Oshiomhole of looting the state resources of Edo State when he was governor.
Dr Ochei lamented that even though they have credible evidence to prove that the former governor looted the resources of Edo State through awards of bogus and inflated contracts, the EFCC under Mr. Magu has refused to investigate him.
He said, “Instead of bringing Oshiomhole to questioning, the acting chairman of EFCC is shielding him. The former governor was said to have earlier boasted that as long as Mr. Magu remains as the head of the EFCC, nobody can do him anything.”
