Some aggrieved youths in the Anguwan Sarkin Hausawa area of Magama Gumau in Toro federal constituency of Bauchi State, have issued a five-day ultimatum to the member representing the constituency, Hon. Ismail Haruna Dabo to resume work on the abandoned culvert project in their community or face direct action.
The ultimatum was made public by the youth leader, Mr. Abdullahi Ibrahim Saleh, in a short online video, showing him and other concerned residents carrying out makeshift efforts at the stalled site.
Ibrahim described the abandonment of the project as inhumane, stating that the half-completed culvert poses a threat to lives and property in the area.
He further lamented that stagnant water and thick mud have rendered the road completely inaccessible, disrupting activities and endangering the safety of residents and passersby.
According to him, if no progress is made within five days, the youth will take matters into their hands by refilling the culvert to restore accessibility.
While acknowledging the project as a commendable initiative when launched, Ibrahim criticised the extended delay, arguing that the once-promising project has now become more of a hazard than a help to the community.
While reacting to the development, a close aide to Hon. Ismail Dabo, Mal. Zaharaddeen Rabiu Salarma, addressed the concerns in a WhatsApp chat, calling for calm.
He assured residents that work will resume immediately, stating that trucks have begun delivering sand for continuation of the project since Wednesday.
Zahradeen Salarma attributed the delay to unforeseen challenges rather than neglect, emphasising that the wellbeing of constituents remains a top priority for Hon. Dabo.
It will be recalled that Hon Dabo commenced the township road and culvert project in Magama nearly two years ago.
However, slow progress and recurring interruptions have fueled growing frustration among residents, who accuse the lawmaker of displaying a nonchalant attitude despite repeated appeals for completion.
