French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s resignation following the unexpected results of the snap parliamentary elections in France, the Élysée Palace announced on Monday.
Macron has asked Attal to remain in his position temporarily to ensure the country’s stability.
Attal announced his resignation on Sunday evening after the preliminary election results were revealed.
Official results released by the Interior Ministry on Monday showed that the French left-wing alliance, New Popular Front (NFP), emerged as the surprising victor in Sunday’s run-off election, though it did not secure an absolute majority. The new alliance did not enter the elections with a lead candidate.

Macron’s centrist Ensemble bloc came in second place, while Marine Le Pen’s far-right nationalist National Rally (RN), initially seen as the favorite after the first round of voting, finished third.
None of the groups achieved an absolute majority, complicating the formation of a new government.
