Local government system in Nigeria, mere disaster — Ogbeh

A former Minister of Agriculture and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Audu Ogbeh, has asserted that the local government system in Nigeria is a complete disaster due to its non-functionality.

He has urged President Bola Tinubu to focus his attention on the local government administration, given its proximity to the grassroots.

In an interview, Chief Ogbeh stated that the local government administration is failing to make any significant impact on the people, as stipulated in the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He expressed his belief that the monthly allocation received from the Federation Accounts lacks justification.

“There is a pressing need to re-examine the local government system in the country because it is not functioning. Let’s not deceive ourselves; the local government system in Nigeria is a mere disaster.

The allocated funds do not reach them to carry out their constitutional functions,” Chief Ogbeh lamented.

He highlighted some dire situations at the grassroots level, stating, “There are no graders to level the village roads leading to farms, and the state of various schools has become an eyesore, with children forced to sit on bare floors under leaking roofs.”

Chief Ogbeh vehemently expressed his stance on the issue, emphasizing that the current situation offers no justification for the significant monthly allocation received from the Federation Account.

He called on President Tinubu to thoroughly investigate the activities at the local government level and not hesitate to hold accountable those hindering progress within the system.
