An Iwo-based lawyer, Segun Obiwusi recently revealed his philanthropic nature by putting a smile on the faces of some pupils with disability in his hometown. TUNDE BUSARI reports:
Apparently touched by the spate of long neglect suffered by the school for special needs children in Iwo, a legal practitioner, Barrister Segun Obiwusi has risen to the aid of the school with his recent donation of a block of two toilets for the use of the pupils under the auspice of Omo Oloore Obiwusi Foundation, a Non Governmental Organisation.
Obiwusi’s latest effort is a continuation of his resolve to add value to the society with a view to putting smiles on the faces of the vulnerable and downtrodden.
The school for special needs children in Iwo appropriately falls under the category of the foundation’s target, requiring its management to seek help from kindhearted Nigerians.
Obiwusi indeed had a memorable day when he handed over the property to the school management in the presence and with the royal support of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi, who officially commissioned the project.
The arrival of Oba Akanbi drew even uninvited guests to the school compound to the extent that more residents rushed to the venue when the programme was being rounded off.
While cutting the tape, Oba Akanbi eulogized Barrister Obiwusi for his kind heart and urged other sons and daughters of the town to borrow a leaf from him to move the ancient town forward.
The Oluwo also urged the youths to join him in improving the life of the people just as he publicly expressed his pleasure to the donor, describing him a true son of the soil whom must be encouraged.
“I am very proud of Segun for showing that he is a youth to reckon with. He keys well with my vision of changing the face of my town. He is a good example I want others to emulate. We should all imbibe the spirit of giving instead of taking. Segun has shown the way and I will continue to encourage him. I will encourage others who also show love for the development of the town.
“The era every aspect of development is left to the government is over. We have to look beyond that now and show seriousness that we really need development. When we do this, the government would not have a choice than to support us. Barrister Obiwusi is a good example of my vision for this town,” the Oluwo said.
The chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Abdurasak Salinsile, described the donor as a chip off the old block being a son of a retired Vice-Principal of Baptist High School, Pa Obiwusi.
Salinshile, who is the secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, declared that it was high time that teachers’ reward should no longer be reserved in heaven, stating that good teachers deserve the benefit of their noble profession before they transited to the hereafter.
“I am particularly happy for Pa Obiwusi and his wife for being alive to reap the fruit of their hard labour. What our young lawyer has done is an evidence of the value they inculcated in him. How many of his contemporaries think the way he thinks? It shows that you brought him up to appreciate humanity and offer assistance to the less privileged. If he continues this way, his future is bright,” he said.
Barrister Obiwusi explained that he was inspired to build the bathroom having got wind of the trouble pupils passed through in the recent past. He stated that the donation is his little contribution to end the suffering, even though he maintained the school still needs more attention from individuals and groups.
“We should not wait until we make big money before we assist the needy. What I have done is in good spirit to encourage others to look in the direction of the school. I was brought up to appreciate humanity and I will stop at nothing to contribute my quota however little in improving the life of those I feel I am better than. I give glory to God for giving me the opportunity and means to live my dream,” he said.
Other dignitaries in attendance included the Ekerin Oluwo of Iwoland, Otunba Adebayo Aremu, Headmistress of the school, Mrs Roda Olufunmilayo Akande and Obiwusi’s parents.
