A senior German lawmaker, Thomas Röwekamp, has said he expects German soldiers to take part in peacekeeping operations if a permanent ceasefire is reached between Russia and Ukraine.
Röwekamp, chairman of the Bundestag’s Defence Committee, told WDR on Wednesday that past experience has shown Europeans and Ukrainians cannot fully rely on Russian commitments, making effective military deterrence essential.
“That also means German soldiers will, after a peace agreement with Russia, play a role in ensuring peace is permanently upheld,” Röwekamp said.
He cited logistics, training Ukrainian forces, and air defence as areas where the Bundeswehr could provide long-term support.
“For Ukrainians, binding security guarantees are crucial in any future peace deal,” Röwekamp added, noting the deep mistrust towards Russia after nearly three and a half years of war.
He stressed that Europe, alongside the United States, must be ready to repel any renewed Russian aggression.
“No one wants war,” he said, “but the most effective way to prevent another conflict is to deter the Russian army with a strong and credible troop presence.”
