THE Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo has reechoed resolve to fight all forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The Dean of Students’ Affairs of the university, Dr Tajudeen Olumoko, gave this position at a recent event organised by the university in conjunction with the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), which is a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
The event held on campus had “Our schools can be free from SGBV” as theme.
Olumoko, in his keynote address, said LASU as an institution had never and would never tolerate any form of SGBVs either by students or members of staff and their visitors.
According to him, LASU is one of the few universities in the country with a working document and policy on SGBV and will sustain the tempo.
He said the university would not spare any student or staff no matter highly placed, caught and culpable of any SGBV, particularly on campus as such person or group would face the wrath of law.
He noted that the university also frowned at unacceptable dressing either by male or female students anywhere on campus.
He urged participants not to hesitate in reporting any incident involving SGBV to the authorities, assuring them of protection.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of LASU Career Development Centre, Dr. Igot Ofem, told the students to know that their enrolment in LASU is to acquire knowledge and skills to become useful to themselves and the society.
She said effects of SGBV, particularly sexual harassment on survivors, could last for a lifetime and therefore all should rise up against it, noting that LASU had a standing team in place with WARDC representatives as members.
In his own contribution, Professor Simeon Dosunmu from Faculty of Education, LASU, said there was no reason in law for anybody to justify any form of SGBV including sexual harassment not only on campus but also elsewhere..
He said unsolicited touching, blocking of pathway, vulgar words and irrational comments particularly about opposite sex as part of actions that could be counted as SGBV as the case may be.
On her part, WARDC representative at the forum, Modupe Asama promised that the organisation would continue to support LASU community in the fight against the menace.
LASU SGBV Red Club was launched at the event to work specially with WARDC to further strengthen the fight against the scourge.
