Landslide rocks Bayelsa community

A massive landslide has reportedly rocked the ancient town of Odi in Kolokuma-Opokuma council area of Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the incident which occurred on Sunday at about 9 am destroyed ten houses along the bank of the River Nun.

Though no life was lost, the incident, according to sources caused panic in the community. The landslide is believed to have been caused by water erosion.

An indigene of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity said “it was God’s doing that the incident happened during the day and not night.

“It is one of the many challenges faced by riverine communities. It started at about 7 am as earth tremor and two hours later ground gave way causing the houses to collapse. Thank God no life was lost.”

The Chief Whip of Bayelsa State House of Assembly and member-elect for Kolokuma/Opokuma constituency I, Hon. Tonye Isenah an indigene of Odi yesterday paid an unscheduled visit to the impacted area.

Hon. Isenah expressed concern over the level of destruction caused by river erosion, calling on relevant authorities to come to the aid of the victims.
